I learned of an appalling flaw in our justice system today. I learned that my state, Michigan, was one of 25 states in the United States that allowed for children under 18 years old to be incarcerated with adults. In fact, they are kept in the same cells with criminals over thirty years old, and, who have lengthy sentences and nothing to lose. I am disturbed at the morality of this legal code. How can we stand by and allow other men in the name of justice to brutally steal life and opportunity out of our children? We are and have the model of a near perfect legal system. Yes. But this here is far from justice and law. We must come together as citizens of this world and this century, and say no! We must say no to this hateful practice and irrational deprivation of the future to our children by so few, who wield the deadly power of destiny through the legal system. It is unjust to any child, and no child deserves to be raped everyday for 30days, everyday, serving a 30day sentence, for a property crime. It is unjust and there is a legal, human, and moral flaw in this practice. This isn’t rehabilitation, this is destruction. Let us help them and petition that these codes and all such codes be discarded from all legal systems. Let the child be punished like a child so that he/she may grow up. Let us keep them juvenile until they are indeed adults. Let us give the future not steal it from our children. Help. Please help these children. Love is what children need to overcome the overwhelming challenges of life.
